Explore the benefits of listening to podcasts and music while running, and discover how they can enhance your motivation, mood, and learning opportunities.
Welcome to the Thrilling World of the Flying RuNR, brought to you by The Marathon Mates. Hey there, everyone. It’s Tony from the Flying Runner, and welcome to Out and Back, the turnaround point for your weekly running journey. Every guest on the Flying RuNR podcast gets asked the same fast six questions. Maybe now we’ve got to move them to the fast seven now that Sydney has been added to the majors. One of the questions is always, do you listen to podcasts or music while you’re running?
For me, it’s not necessarily an either-or scenario. My preference nowadays is for podcasts, but there are days when you just need a full-on playlist to keep you going. It’s always good to know that music’s there when you need it. However, I also know people who run with minimal distractions, staying dialed into their body, form, and the run itself. I’ve done that on occasion, but only when I’ve left my headphones at home. I can certainly understand and appreciate that some people do this as part of their training.
Today, I want to share some key benefits of listening to podcasts and music while you’re running.
Motivation and Focus
Upbeat music can boost energy and help maintain a steady rhythm. There are playlists on Spotify dialed into specific cadence numbers. If you run at a certain cadence or want to ramp up to one, music can be the way to go. This helps you stay motivated during long and challenging runs. Podcasts, on the other hand, provide mental stimulation and distraction. Focusing on the conversation helps time pass more quickly, especially beneficial during long endurance runs.
Mood and Enjoyment
Listening to favorite tunes or engaging content can elevate your mood and make running a more enjoyable experience. Inspiring podcasts or lyrics can combat feelings of fatigue, pushing you to run further and faster than planned.
Learning and Relaxation
Podcasts offer a chance to learn something new, stay informed, and explore topics of interest, turning your run into a dual-purpose activity. You’re growing while running and making yourself healthier. Relaxing or meditative music can help maintain a calm and steady pace, especially during recovery runs or cool-downs, encouraging a balanced workout approach.
So, what do you do? Do you listen to podcasts, music, or are you one of those who run without any auditory input? Let us know in the comments and share why you do what you do. I’d love to hear.
